The Difference Between a Breast Lift and Breast Augmentation

Not all breast surgeries are the same. Each procedure focuses on a different aesthetic goal. With that thought at the forefront, there are diverse topics of discussion a patient should have with their plastic surgeon during their consultation appointment.

In San Diego, breasts lifts are a procedure a woman considers after she has had children or has lost a significant amount of weight. The extra heaviness in the bust due to both of these scenarios does weigh down the breast which results in the following:

  • Excess skin
  • Loss of volume
  • A droopy appearance

A breast lift, also known as a mastopexy, helps correct the above challenges and restore a more youthful appearance.

During a consultation for a breast lift, a board certified surgeon will assess what degree of a breast lift is necessary. The more comprehensive work needed will result in surgery usually not to exceed three hours.

The different breast lift techniques include:

  • Crescent Breast Lift
  • Benelli Mastopexy
  • Circumvertical Lift
  • Vertical Mastopexy
  • Full Breast Lift

A surgeon will review each of these techniques and discuss which one will offer the most optimal results. During this decision making process, it’s highly important to discuss the scarring from each of these techniques.

Another point of discussion will be the use of breast implants if more volume is desired. In some instances a woman’s bust will have sufficient volume following a lift while others may require more. An experienced board certified plastic surgeon will be able to make this determination ahead of time during the consultation appointment and ultimately the preoperative appointment.

For a breast augmentation, breast implants are used to increase the size of a woman’s naturally small chest or even to correct symmetry issues. In San Diego, breast augmentation surgeries continue to grow in demand.

Through research before their consultation appointment, patients can discuss the incision techniques and types of breast implants which would offer the best results.

The three incisions to discuss at length are as follows:

  • Axillary – located at the underarm
  • Areolar – located underneath the nipple and usually not advised for those who plan to breastfeed in the future
  • Inframammary – located at the underside of the breast fold

This is an outpatient procedure for these surgeries. It is advisable to have any prescriptions filled ahead of time, appoint someone to drive a patient home after surgery, and to have assistance a couple of days after surgery.

Following surgery, a postsurgical bra will be worn.

Be it a breast lift or breast augmentation, the questions to ask a doctor at the consultation and also the preoperative appointment should include the following:

  • How long will the surgery take?
  • How many follow-up doctor appointments will there be?
  • What are the risks or side effects to watch out for?
  • How much time off from work should be taken?
  • When can exercise and normal activities be resumed?

And more….

Above all, during a consultation it’s important to never feel pressured into booking a surgery.  A consultation is a time to discuss information and think about it thoroughly before moving forward with a procedure.
